We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.
Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The plot commences when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.
The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
The couple confront the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
